If the pre-foreclosure is in the auction category on RealtyTrac, you should see an auction date, time and location on the property details page; however, I'm guessing when you refer to pre-foreclosure you are referring to properties where a Notice of Default or Lis Pendens has been filed but a public foreclosure auction has not yet been scheduled.

You can sometimes call the trustee or attorney listed under the contact information on the property details page and they will be able to give you the tentative auction date. But if the auction date has not been scheduled they may not know it either.

I would recommend signing up for the Property Watch e-mail alerts for the property. RealtyTrac will send you an e-mail if the foreclosure status changes. So if the property moves from pre-foreclosure to auction (in which case an auction date would be available) then you will receive an e-mail alerting you of that. To sign up for the Property Watch e-mail alerts, simply click on the "Get E-mail Alerts" link near the top of the property details page for the property you are interested in and follow the instructions from there.

Of course, you don't necessarily have to wait for the auction to purchase a pre-foreclosure property. You can try to directly contact the homeowner in default (use the "Contact Owner" link on the property details page to send a postcard or series of postcards) or have your agent contact the homeowner in default to see if they are interested in selling. Selling the property may be the best option for the homeowner to avoid foreclosure.
